Odyssey Love

Valentine's Day is on the way; love is in the air.  With that in mind, LOOK at this picture by Romare Beardon.  Use this picture as your inspiration for a discussion of "love" in The Odyssey.  Think about these questions:
Who is loving who?  Is their love true?  You can talk about love as shown in the painting, or love as represented in Homer's "The Odyssey".  300 words or more.

THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION OF LOVE IN YOUR OWN LIFE

  1. Love brings joy, happiness, and prosperity around anywhere even if you don’t have it in your life. When I started to read “Odyssey” I notice that in the beginning of the story and movie that he have a wife named Penelope. I could tell for sure that Penelope truly cared deeply upon her husband Odyssey. I could tell from the way Penelope looked at Odyssey when sailing to Troy in the movie. The way she react to Odyssey leaving I indicated that she’ll miss him and whatever happens to him she’ll still love him regardless of what happens. Towards the middle of the movie and the story she’ll still doesn’t want to decide on her newly husband. Instead she wait instill he return to his homeland. Even that their many maybe worthy men to be her husband, instead she keep weaving instill he arrives. Odyssey on the other hand he cares deeply for Penelope even that he made love to a goddess. I bet Penelope would probably be disappointed if she ever find out he did that but she would understand. Since in order for Odyssey to save his men he had to make love to the goddess to change them back to normal human begins. I could tell that Odyssey didn’t want to do that had no choice I think he said in the passage at the part of the goddess that he a married man I think. So, their the main characters that love each other and will do anything for each other. Odyssey will epically probably die to save Penelope in any situation. That true love when you would risk your life over someone else. Another thing is Odyssey and Penelope had a baby boy together that another sign of love. Odyssey and Penelope true love birds in “ Odyssey”.

  2. There was a lot of love for Odysseus in his journey. Even though he always loved his wife Penelope. There were other god girls that loved him to. During his way back home, there was lady god who loved so much that she didn’t want Odysseus to leave her. Her name was Calypso. She was a great god. She loved Odysseus so much. When Odysseus arrived there, she was ready to take of him. Her maids were treating him the way he wanted to be treated. He wanted to be treated like a mortal. But while Odysseus was living there for a while, Calypso and Odysseus made love together a few times when he was there. She washed his clothes for and fed a lot of good food. In the movie it didn’t look like Odysseus was ready to leave. Odysseus was dancing with Calypso’s maids and helping them wash.

There was person who loved Odysseus during his journey. She was a goddess who name was Circe. She turned Odysseus men into animals, but in order for them to turn back to their normal selves, must make love to Circe in the bed. When Odysseus did, all his men were turned back to their selves. After that Odysseus and his men stayed for a little longer. Circe and her maids were treating like kings. They were getting massages and laying down in hot tubs. The maids were feeding lots of fruit and wine. They were so comfortable that they looked liked they didn’t want to leave. Odysseus didn’t know every day is a year that passes by. SO Odysseus thought they stayed for five days, but it was really five years. Odysseus couldn’t believe it really has been five years that he has been in the bed with Circe for so long.

In the picture I see a loving African American family joined together celebrating something they probaly believe in. I see lots of love because they are all their together in this small place dancing and having a little party. And it looks like they are jus sitting there being boring but to them its like they are having the best time together ever. And the two people in the front look like their trying to grab hands and dance to whatever music that seems to be playing. The other people on the right side in the corner seem to be just chilling and enjoying themselves. The blue bird is also sitting up on the window chilling and so is the grey cat. The lady on the left at the bottom looks like shes fixing a dress for the queen or something. And the man looks like hes her king or something. There's absolutley more things going on in this picture I cant really see but this is the most I can see.

  4. There is a lot of love in the story the Odyssey. Odyssesus and his men shows love through out the story. Odyssesus loves his people enough to go fight for them and travel for 20 years and more without anyone or no one but his men that trusted and loved him and treated him like the hero he was. His men who came along with him also showed love in the story. They left there families away to go defeat Troy, that shows that they love there hometown enough to leave what they love the most for 20 years and more. They also had love for each other to be with each other that long and not having anything or anyone other than each other. In the story when they came across problems that one of them could be killed they had each others back when it was needed. Oddyssesus wife, Penelope also showed a lot of love for her husband. She made a promise to Oddyssesus that she would never move on to another man until there new born son grew aa beard. That shows how much she loves him, because that is a long time to be alone without a husband when your use to having one. When Oddyssesus left she showed alot of emotion, about how sad she was about him leaving. Oddyssesus mother also showed a lot of love in the story. Just the way she hugged Odyssesus before he left for Troy showed how much she really loved him. She looked out for his son while he was gone. Towards the end, his mother kills herself. I think, she kills her self because she misses her son so much. That also represents love because she loved him so much that she could no longer live without him.

  5. In the Odyssey there is a lot of war and violence, but there is also a lot of love. There is love in a family, like Odysseus and Penelope and Telemachus, love between lovers and husbands and wives, like with Penelope and Odysseus, one-sided love like the love that Calypso and Odysseus had where the goddess Calypso tried to keep Odysseus with her on her island, even with promises of riches and immortality Odysseus, who was true to his love, did not budge; even with Penelope and her suitors , even they could have provided riches and a father figure in Telemachus’ life. In Rosmare Beardon’s picture I don’t really see what that is depicting or how it pertains to love. But I will give it my best shot. In this picture it looks like a weaver is having a party or a gathering and it looks like a man is standing and talking to the weaver with his wife standing next to him. The woman looks like she is pregnant. Already, right there if that woman is his wife then that would make their love romantic and family centered. Then when the son or daughter is born that makes the love whole and pure, it creates bond between father and son or father and daughter. Then there is also the bond between the mother and son or the mother and daughter. Also the child who is sitting next to the weaver might be the weaver’s son or daughter of the weaver’s apprentice. If the child is the weaver’s child than that is another example of family love. Even if the child is an apprentice for him then there is still that bond between teacher and student. There may even be a relationship between the weaver and the traveler. They say a picture speaks a thousand words, but this picture could speak a thousand more.

  6. Odysseys and Penelope are in love. They have been in love for a long period of time. They also have a son named Telemachus. They live a beautiful life and love each other deeply. Odyssey takes care of his family and make sure everything is ok. Odysseys and Penelope will never stop loving one another. Why? Because their love is true and nothing distract them or make them want to fall apart. When Penelope was about to give birth to Telemachus Odysseys was on his way to the Trojan War until he found out his son was about to be born. When he found out that his son was about to be born he turned around and started heading back to his house. When he got there she was so happy and excited that he came back for his son’s birth. The best moment of your life. When Telemachus was being born Odysseys wasn’t even worried about the Trojan War because, his son was more important. But, when Telemachus was born Odysseys did have to finish doing what he was doing which was, going to the Trojan War. He really did not want to but he had to do it. Telemachus was okay with his lovely mother. This shows that Odysseys really loves his family if he did not want to live them and finish the Trojan War. When Odyssey’s came back everything was fine and they lived there happy lives and loved each other. This is what you call real love and true love. Odysseys and Penelope definitely has true and real LOVE.

  7. In this illustration, I see a religious wedding. The way love is shown in the painting is by there being a wedding reception and there are couples showing each other love. The man in the middle of the painting is the groom and the brides maid is the lady to the right of him. The lady in the bottom left corner of the painting is maybe one of the couples parent or may even be a friend of the newly weds. The love is so strong in the painting, because it shows lots of support for the people it's for. The wedding to me looks like it is on an island that one of the newly weds were born. The family loves each other so much that they even wear the same color. You would know if a person didn't love another person, because they would wear the color they wanted to wear. There is more love in the painting by the two people in green being together and staying by each others side. You can also tell that all the love is true by each person at the great wedding reception having a kind of hat on there head. Pertaining to the Odyssey, Odysseus's love was extremely strong for his wife, his family, and also his crew that will ride with him to the end, which is another good sign of love. Tiresias showed good love to Odysseus by him giving Odysseus his predictions on the journey ahead. Athena has true love for Odysseus, because she does not want to choose a new husband no matter how good the gift is or how good the man is. Odysseus is returning the favor by him trying to go back and save his wife from picking another husband, because he knows he doesn't want that.

    “The Devoted Longest Yard”

“Although the road is long and hard,
The journey itself can’t catch you off guard.
Driven by drive and other miles,
This road will have many trials,
because this road is only one yard.” –IMANI RUFFIN

In the Odyssey, Homer embodied love as a symbol of devotion more than anything. He felt that dedication and loyalty is love, because Odysseus stayed dedicated to his servants and crew members no matter what. Even after the crew opened the bad of winds and crushed his chances of going to Ithaca earlier than usual, he still pledged himself worthy to be their master.

I too, like Homer think love is dedication and loyalty, because Odysseus loved Penelope. Penelope loved Telemachus. Calypso loved Odysseus, because she didn’t want to let him off the island. All of the gods and goddesses loved Odysseus (except for Poseidon) because day by day they gave him the necessities he needed on his voyage. But to me, I don’t think Penelope and Odysseus’s love was as true as Homer thinks, because both Penelope and Odysseus had affairs. Penelope’s affair was with the sea. Odysseus’s affair was with Calypso and technically Circe, but he didn’t have any other choice but to “go to bed” with her because that was the only way to get off the island yet he took it upon himself to stay in bed for no longer than what seemed like 5 days in his mind but in actuality was 5 years but if he really loved Penelope he would have found other ways than to fornicate. Both affairs occurred before Telemachus growing a full beard on his chin and both were willing. No matter what the stakes, to me this is not love. The strongest love, in my perspective was Odysseus’s servants and Odysseus, because they were at sea for 16 years, but for them, because that loved each other so much it felt like 5 months. That’s how little of an adventure they were aware of having, because they were so distracted by each other’s company.

I think this love was the devoted longest yard of Odysseus’s journey!

  9. The love in the Odysseus is amazing. It has twist and turns Odysseus king of Ithaca went on a journey to fight and lead his men in the Trojan war. After the war Odysseus talk to Poseidon and was cursed forever. Odysseus real journey now begins. His men sailed to a uncharted islands not knowing the dangers they were facing. They got to one island and found the god of winds there. When they were almost home his crew open the bag of winds and were cast back out into the sea. After a while they wounded up on the island of Circe they were there for five years they went to the underworld Odysseus seen his mom soul there she killed herself to be with her son. They went threw the Strait of Syllabic and were attack by sea monsters. Odysseus was the only one who survived. After days at sea he was on the goddess of the seas island back at home Odysseus wife Penelope was still waiting for her love to return while there son went to find Odysseus. Going on dangerous adventures at sea for 16 years with your caring crew your wife waiting for you that long and your son not even your wife doubting that your dead. That is powerful love right there in the Odysseus I mean powerful.

  10. In the story the odyssey, odysseus has many incounters with love. When really only one is true. Odysseus believes that he can still get home to see his only love pinelipy. Through his journey he is forced to be in bed with a goddess, to save his brothers. Later on in the story he finds him self on an island filled with nothing but women. The goddess loves him and he can think of nothing but his true love. Through this whole journey odysseus is driven by his love for his wife and to ithica. What felt like 5 days were really 5 years because of how time is bent on the island of the first goddess. The love he had with the goddess was not real but only just to save his brothers. The love with the 2nd goddess was not true love either. Only the love with pinelipy was true love. That is my answer to the quetsions.

  11. In the story the Odysey, Odysseus sleeps with many women but kept his focus on his beautiful wife, Penelopy. The entire journey Odysseus tries his hardest to get back to his wife and lets nothing get in his way. Penelopy is the same way. When other men attempt to gain her love, she stalls them to wait for her husband to return. They trully love each other even though Odysseus sleeps with other females. They are a good example of what love looks like.

  12. in the odyssey there is alot of love and things happening in ther also the picture up top explains alot about hoe this can relate to the odessey. In the movie you have O and his wife Penople and the son Telemus, and the mother and all other things going on. As her went off to Troy he had love rferom his wife and family and all. As he got lost along the way than he had found love in this other woman named Clayso and she had her own little island. So the were in Love then he had to leave becasue a Goddess had saifd do or her little island will be gone into picses. So then it was them to also the girl and tone of the men that was going to get married or be with O's wife he didnt return back alive. She made love to one of the men and she liked him. Soit is alot of this going on in this movie that you really cant out into words or you can but. There were alot of people that can relate to this picture in this Story and Moive Odessey.

  13. In the story the Odysey, love is everywhere. Odysseus loves his wife Penelope. When he was gone for several years he still kept his love for her. Penelope had many men confront her, but she always turned them down, she already has a husband. Odysseus had love for his crew also. Everywhere they went he tried to keep them out of danger, and he made sure or tried to keep everyone safe. Odysseus had to make love to a Godess in order to save his men. When Odysseus was lost at see he came to an island, and on that island he met Calypso. Calypso hasn't seen a man in years. So she falls in love with Odysseus. When Odysseus tries to escape she sends her servants to try to catch him. Calypso says no one comes to this island and no one leaves. Love is everywhere in this story. If Penelope found out what Odysseus has been doing while he was gone i bet she would be hurt because all those years she didn't do anything she kept her love with him.

  14. There is lots of love in the odyssey. Even though I came back in the middle of the story i still caught up on who loves who! Odysseus loves many people and has to do things to survive and make it home to his true love Penelope. He loves his crew very much and without them I really don’t think he would be able to survive on his journey or would have been able to make it as far as he is right now. He is in love with his true love Penelope, which is his wife... They have been together many years but they were separated when he had to go on his journey. He also had to make love and do things to a goddess named Calypso. He is trapped on her island and she helps him because he needs help and he has to take the offer because he needs food and other types of things. Calypso hasn’t seen a man in years and when she seen Odysseus she didn’t want him to leave or try to escape her island! Her women have never seen a man before so they are very shy towards him. Penelope is committed to her husband Odysseus, even though Odysseus told her “if I don’t return, you must find you another husband". She still haven’t give up on hoping that Odysseus comes home, she has a lot of men coming towards her asking for marriage and such things but she turns them down!!

  15. Love is in the air for Penelope and Odysseus. Men are throwing themselves at Penelope’s feet while everybody thinks Odysseus is dead. But Penelope knows he’s alive. She feels it in her heart and in her soul, while she watches his tree still stand. While Odysseus was trying to get home to his wife, he came upon complications with other women who fell in love with him. He sailed and visited the witch-goddess Circe. She turned half of his men into animals after feeding them cheese and wine. Hermes warned Odysseus about Circe and gave Odysseus a drug called moly, a resistance to Circe’s magic. Circe, being attracted to Odysseus' resistance, fell in love with him and released his men. Odysseus and his crew remained with her on the island for one year, while they feasted and drank. Finally, Odysseus' men convinced Odysseus that it was time to leave for Ithaca. Odysseus and his crew crossed the ocean and reached a harbor at the western edge of the world, where Odysseus sacrificed to the dead and summoned the spirit of the old prophet Tiresias to help him. Next Odysseus met the spirit of his own mother, who had died of grief during his long absence; from her, he learned for the first time news of his own household, threatened by the greed of Penelope's suitors. Returning to Circe's island, they were helped by her on the remaining stages of the journey. They skirted the land of the Sirens, passed between the six-headed monster Scylla and the whirlpool, where they rowed directly between the two. However, Scylla dragged the boat towards her by grabbing the oars and ate six men. They landed on the island of Thrinacia. There, Odysseus' men ignored the warnings of Tiresias and Circe and hunted down the sacred cattle of the sun god Helios. This sacrilege was punished by a shipwreck in which all but Odysseus drowned. He was washed ashore on the island of Calypso, where she compelled him to remain as her lover for seven years before he escaped. While this was going on, Penelope was holding out on the men waiting on her answer. She told them, “I will choose when I am done with my,” When she was almost done, and Odysseus was still not there, she started to undo her project. Penelope and Odysseus both hoped they would once be reunited again.

  16. In this picture, you see a couple of people; those people might be lovers of one another. I believe that the women are in love with the men that are in the room along with them. Like Odysseus is in love with his wife but when he leave to fight off in troy he falls in love with other women. I believe this picture is from the scene from when Odysseus meets Tiresias and the women are watching Tiresias while she patches up Odysseus wounds and give him a bath and make love to him. I think that is because the women have never in their life seen a man before on the island. So while Tiresias is taking care of Odysseus they are shocked and are watch her because they care learn things from her about taking care of a man. Also Tiresias is in love with Odysseus and refuses to let him go off of her island, so while him in there with her he falls in under her spell and slowly falls in love. I don't think anyone in this picture is in love with one another because it looks like all women and one man. Like all of Tiresias Maids and Tiresias herself are or is in love with Odysseus. Like Odysseus really loved his wife, but women was a major problem with him. Because they were attractive to him so he thought since he wouldn’t make it back home he should just interact with the women he run into. And out of all of those women he chose Tiresias. She wanted him to stay with her forever but she had to let him go. He wanted to stay but it as a must that she had to let him go. Lastly I personally think that this picture refers to Odysseus and Tiresias.

  17. In the story the odyssey their has been many in counters with love mostly with the king of Ithaca Odysseus .Odysseus has had love with different goddess ,but he has a true love for his wife Penelope. she is the women who fathered his child .their love is very true the reason for me thinking this is because even though the had been away from each other for a period of time they still have that connection. that type of attraction to each other that never goes away. long years have passed by and it was easy for them to re candle their relationship easy. i personally think this is beyond true love. Penelope knows that what they have will never go away. we all do. even when Penelope did not hear or see Odysseus for many years in her heart she knew that he was still alive and would not give up hope. also their was love with Odysseus and his son Telemachus. the reason i say this is because he loves his son very dearly and on top of that ,Telemachus is his first son .the future of his kingdom reason i say this because he will give his all to his son make sacrifices. also love between Penelope and Telemachus. that special mother son connection. they love is really true. She sticks with him to the very end. and that is the end of this love thing that is going on in the story about love in the odyssey.

In the Odyssey, there is much love flowing through the lands in the story. One example would be Odysseus and Penelope. The two were married. They both seemed to do favoring things for each other. Odysseus had made a bed for him and Penelope to sleep in. They both showed their love for each other beyond physical affection. When it came time for Odysseus to leave and fight in the war, they both equally grieved. Odysseus especially cared for her happiness by telling her to move forward without him if he was gone too long. He wanted her to remarry another man to be happy with. She loved and trusted him enough to honor his will for her. When it did come time for Penelope to remarry or find another man to be in her life, she took her time with it and even honored Odysseus by making a shroud for him. Although it may not have been obvious in the story written, in the actions of both of the individuals you could tell the fiery passion of love for each other. Another connection of love would be Odysseus and his mother. Considering the fact that she is the being that gave him birth and that has been with him throughout his life, of course, they have a strong connection. On Odysseus’ side, he was strong enough to be away from his mother for a long time without worrying terribly, but that was not the case on the mother’s side. The mother could not handle longing for her son. She felt as though he son would not come back. When she realized this, she decided to drown herself in the sea to hope to join her son in the underworld. Love in this story is steadfast. They are often taken to extremes.

  19. in the movie or story of odysseus they had alot of loving flowing around. odysseus had alot of love going on with his wife and his mom. odysseus was a kind man and evrybody respected him. he has made a bed for penelope to sleep on. he was one of the king of ithaca and already he had a lot of respect going on anyway but people respected him more for what he did not what he was already known for. he has did alot of things for people. people had very much love for him. an example is his mom and his wife. they loved him becuause he has saved alot of people and helped people out. he was not worried about his self more he was worried about people that he could rescured. he has did alot of things and gone on alot of journeys. this is what he was known for. this is why odysseus is the person he is today.

  20. There is much love shown in The Odyssey. A good example is the love between Odysseus and Penelope. They were a married couple with a child, Telemachus. You can tell that their love was real because he told her that if he doesn't come back she can choose another man to be with. Another example would be between Odysseus and his men. Him and men fight for and with each other; like brothers. The God of Wind also showed love by giving Odysseus the bag of wind. Someone else who showed him love would also be Tiresias because he helped him by telling him that his trip home would be a heck of a trip. Hermes played a good role of showing Odysseus love by telling Calypso to let Odysseus go and telling him to eat the grass so he wouldn't be turned into a pig when he drink the poison. Odysseus also received love physically first from his wife, then the queen, and last Calypso. At the end when him and his son first met they began to love each other. In all, Odysseus gave and received much love in The Odyssey.

  21. There are many essential emotions that form the building blocks of our lives. These emotions help to shape the people that we are. These feelings are emotional necessities to ultimately keep us happy. Often times in life we search for a companion, someone to share our love and life with. Odysseus and Penelope's lasting relationship is an obvious representation of love in the Odyssey. Although Odysseus is gone for twenty years he never forgets his faithful wife in Ithaca. This love helps him persevere through the many hardships that he encounters on his journey home. Penelope also exemplifies this same kind of love for Odysseus. At home in Ithaca, she stays loyal to Odysseus by unraveling his shroud and delaying her marriage to the suitors that are courting her. She always keeps the hope that her love, Odysseus, will return. Odysseus and Penelope's marriage clearly illustrates the theme of love. The Odyssey also illustrates other relationships where love is of great importance – one of the most emphasized is the father-son relationship between Odysseus and Telemachos. This relationship is a little awkward because they both never really got to know each other but they still care for each other's well being. When Odysseus hears of all the suitors devouring Telemachos's future fortune and mistreating him, he wants to return and revenge the misuse of his family and property. Odysseus, like any parent, also misses his only child while he is at war.Telemachos on the contrary also displays a lot of love for his father. The other important father-son relationship that exhibits love is the one between Odysseus and Laertes. Odysseus, when he returns, wishes to go see his father. When he confronts his father and tries to hide his identity, he is unable to finish his story because of the great sorrow in his father's eyes. This shows how much he loves his father and what great suffering he caused him.

  22. In this picture there is love all around. I think the people are waiting for their loved ones to get of the boat, just like in the story of Odysseus. Some are celebrating and some are just sitting down. It looks like they are preparing to have a party for the people who are getting of the boat.Like in the movie odysseus shows alot of love for his people in his wife in son. He had to do things he didnt want to do in order to go home.He faced alot things, but in this picture and story their is alot of love for each other.

  23. In ths picture the people are all loving one another. Everyone is sharing their love and support for one another to show that they care. As im looking at the picture to me their love isnt true because they are all going around sharing their love to each other. For example there was person who loved Odysseus during his journey. She was a goddess who name was Circe. She turned Odysseus men into animals, but in order for them to turn back to their normal selves, must make love to Circe in the bed. After he slept with her she wanted more from him but he refused to give it to her. He told her he couldnt because he still loved his beloved wife Penelope.
