This is a three part post.
First, select a character from either "The Lottery" or
"Love of Life" and follow their progression through the story. You will comment on how their character changes from the beginning to the middle to the end.
Second, choose a line from either story and explain why that line is important to the story.
Finally, write about a personal connection you made with either text. This whole response should be at least 350 words.
I read the The Lottery. It was a good book at first i thought it was a lottery that you watch on TV but it was something different that connected me. The lottery wasn't ordinary people would come from there homes sit down at a hose go up and take a piece of folded paper out of a box. Another thing was that the town was called a village. When everybody would get done picking a piece of paper they would unfold it if it was blank you went to the next round. If it had a mark on it you went outside an got stoned by everybody this was one good story but a very mess up lottery.
ReplyDeleteThe character i followed was Mr.Summers at the beginning he was just one of the people at the lottery who called up people in the middle he would ask alot of question to everybody at the lottery and was a little sneaky. At the end he was the same from the beginning to the middle.
First Part: The Lottery was a great story, the character that I liked was Tessie. In the beginning she was late and excited about the Lottery. In the middle she became mad, because she was late for lottery and it was taking too long.By the end while she was late she gets the marked slip, and then each villager obtains a stone and begins to surround her.
ReplyDeleteSecond Part: The important line in the story is when Tessie screamed out," It isn't fair, it isn't right." This line showed me was going to happen to Tessie. The way she screaming those words out and the way she felt about the Lottery.
Third Part: The connection that Tessie and I made was that the lottery is not fair. Out of 300 people only one person must be stoned if their slip has a mark on it. That doesn't make any sense. Its just like saying if don't have my notebook in class then I'll get put out of class. But getting stoned by 300 people is unbelievable. If I was Tessie, I've never go to the lottery. I will stay home and wait or it to be over. If they look for me I will run from them. This story is not what I expected it to be.
First Part: I read the story “The Lottery” I must admit at first I didn’t like the story, but then I read it again. Once I read it again I actually liked it. This story has something to it, I think it’s because it’s different from other stories. The character I chose from the story “The Lottery” is Tessie. I chose Tessie because in the beginning of the story she is excited about the lottery. Then she began to realize that she is late for the lottery and Tessie starts to get angry. Soon she arrives at the lottery, then she receives her slip she doesn’t know that she has the marked slip and as soon as she opened it he villagers began to surround her. I liked Tessie’s character because she didn’t let anything stop her from getting to that lottery but when once she opened the marked slip she knew that was the end for her.
ReplyDeleteSecond Part: “It wasn’t fair,” Tessie Said. I think this line is important because, Tessie is saying that it’s not fair that she get the marked slip because she was late. Also because it was a lottery and that everybody had drawn their slip out of the box except Tessie. And it’s not fair to her because out of three hundred people only one person get stoned.
Third Part: Tessie and I made a huge connection; first because first we are excited about something then comes to find out we are late to the occasion. I agree with Tessie that it wasn’t fair for her to be stoned by 300 people in the village; they could have at least waited for her to get there. It’s also not fair the one out three hundred people get stoned, why couldn’t be like 60 out of three hundred. That’s like us drawing names for a project or something and the person who name doesn’t get drawn does not have to do the project. To be honest that is not fair to everyone in the class has to do the project but that one person and that’s like Jessie getting stoned by 300 hundred people in the village who doesn’t have the marked slip.
First Part: I had read the story The Lottery. When I had saw the name i'm thinking about the movie Lottery Ticket with Bow Wow and Brandon T. Jackson in it. Come to find out when i start to read this is nothing like the movie. So i had started to read the story i really didst like it until kinda of the middle part and more action started coming into the story. I read it all and i actually really like the book. It is very inserting an it is a very nice and good Shot Story.
ReplyDeleteSecond Part: The part that i think was god was when Tessie said "It Wasn't Fair." That was an very important line in the story. It was mainly about how the Lottery was going to happen and things where just not going right in Tessie eyes about The Lottery.
Third Part: The person that i am kinda of alike in the story is Tessie. I am like this person because when she was all saying it wasn't fair in all. I went back in read some parts where i did not get it at and i see why Tessie was saying it wasn't fair. Also out of 300 people in the village they really didn't care about where Tessie was and they did not want to wait for her. I really didn't understand why they where pulling name out of an box just for people to do what i really don't now. Then after all of that out of 300 people only one person had got stoned in the village. Which wasn't fair.
The story The Lottery was very boring to me. To me it had no theme until i got to the end it got interesting. It seems as though Jackson is making a statement regarding hypocrisy and human evil. The lottery is set in a very mundane town, where everyone knows everyone and individuals are typical. Families carry the very ordinary names of Warner, Martin and Anderson. Jackson's portrayal of extreme evil in this ordinary, friendly atmosphere suggests that people are not always as they seem. She implies that underneath one's outward congeniality, there may be lurking a pure evil.
ReplyDelete"This out of all will remain —
They have lived and have tossed:
So much of the game will be gain,
Though the gold of the dice has been lost." This quote is from the story Love Of Life. I didnt read it yet but I think the quote means the love will still remain , he has had experiences but its still others to be loved.
Mr. Summers is the man in charge of the lottery. He prepares the slips of paper to be drawn and he mediates the activity. He is described as a respected man, joking around with the villagers and carrying on this foreboding event with no conscience at all. "Mr. Summers was very good at all this; in his clean white shirt and blue jeans, with one hand resting carelessly on the black box, he seemed very proper and important as he talked interminably to Mr. Graves and the Martins. The name Summers subtly identifies the mood of the short story as well as the administrator himself.Mr. Summers is the man in front, the representative of the lottery, as his name symbolizes the up front, apparent, tone of the event. Mr. Graves, on the other hand, symbolizes the story's underlying theme and final outcome. Mr. Graves is Mr. Summer's assistant, always present but not necessarily in the spotlight. The unobvious threat of his name and character foreshadows the wickedness of the ordinary people, that again, is always present but not in the spotlight.
I read the The Lottery. It was a good book. I thought it was going to be about the the movie the lottery ticket. I must admit at first I didn’t like the story until I go deeper into it. Another thing was that the town was called a village because it was so small. I must admit at first I didn’t like the story until I go deeper into it. The story is about Jessie. I chose Jessie because in the beginning of the story she is excited about the lottery. Then she began to realize that she is late for the lottery and Jessie starts to get angry. Soon she arrives at the lottery, then she receives her slip she doesn’t know that she has the marked slip and as soon as she opened it he villagers began to surround her. I liked Jessie’s character because she didn’t let anything stop her from getting to that lottery but when once she opened the marked slip she knew that was the end for her.
ReplyDeleteJessie had said that it wasn’t fair that she got the marked slip because she was late. Also because it was a lottery and that everyone should have drew their slip from out of the box, but she didn’t get that chance. And it’s not fair for her because out of three hundred people only one person got stoned. Jessie and I made a huge connection; first because first we are excited about something then comes to find out we can’t get what we really want and desire on certain occasions. I agree with Jessie that it wasn’t fair for her to be stoned by 300 people in the village that is very cruel and don’t condone violence; they could have at least waited for her to get there. There village is crazy. That’s like us drawing names for a project or something and the person who name doesn’t get drawn doesn’t have to do the project. To be honest that is inhuman like for anyone to stone someone in my point of view.
• The story that I read was The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. It was a really weird and kind of dark story. At the beginning I liked Bobby Martin and how he was portrayed as a fun-loving person who get's into trouble. But then I was disappointed to see that Mrs. Shirley Jackson didn't really go beyond that little part in the story with Bobby Martin. So the other character that I picked was Mr. Summers. Mr. Summers was described as a jovial person, but towards the end he seemed more exhausted. Bill Hutchinson I found to be pretty interesting. At first I thought he was a good father, but then I saw that he could stone his own wife. First of all, what kind of example is that to stone to your wife, let alone in front of your kids, and your own kids stoned her too. HER KIDS!
ReplyDelete• The line that I chose from the story that I think is important is “Some places have already quit lotteries,". I also think that it’s kind of foreshadowing. If some places have quit the lotteries that some people must have thought that there was something was wrong with it. Maybe that it was inhumane or just plain wrong. Another line that I think is important is "It isn't fair, it isn't right,” Tessie was screaming that just as everyone was coming to kill her. Was it fair that she had to die? I mean just because a strip of paper had a black dot on it, is that any reason for someone to be stoned to death? Tessie was right; it wasn’t fair or right at all. What is the people’s reasoning behind this? Is it fate or is it just coincidence?
• I didn’t really make any connections to any of the characters because the story was kind of unrealistic. Well maybe it’s not unrealistic because I actually did see a movie where everyone stoned a woman just because her husband said to. But to me that’s just unimaginable to me. I just can’t wrap my mind around it.
Part 2: The most important line in the story to me was....Mrs. Delacroix selected a stone so large she had to pick it up with both hands and turned to Mrs. Dunbar. This line is very important because basiclly they were killing Tessie. They were going to hit her with stones until they ran out. When they ran out she would probabily be dead. She was going to get stoned to death. It was going to be a sad site to see but this is a tradition that took place for almost 77 years.
ReplyDelete. The story I read was “The Lottery”. First off have to say the title of the story made me think that the story was about a poor person winning the lottery. Actually the story is completely different. Which I though was very interesting and had suspense to it. I definitely liked the characters. Tessie Hutchinson is my favorite throughout the story .At first Tessie was late and she forgot, even though her whole family was there already. In the middle Tessie didn’t liked that her family was picked for the lottery she thought that Mr. Summers was being unfair. Lastly at the end Tessie was definitely not satisfied with what happened. Tessie got rocked to death by all the villagers. Even her children threw stones at her to death.
ReplyDeleteThe most important part of “The Lottery” is at the end. When Mrs. Hutchinson tells well screams out that “isn’t fair, not fair”. I think it tells an important saying for the story. I think because a random person dies if they get a piece of paper with a black dot on it. Nobody wants to speak up saying that it is wrong. Maybe because it been around for since Old man Warner well longer. Besides that another reason is the reader is surprised about how it ends. I had no idea that was how the end was going to be like.
Finally, I made a connection to “The Lottery” Tessie when she this isn’t fair, isn’t right. Well I think I was probably about maybe three years old. My teacher was a woman and she was light skin with short hair. Well many days this girl who was light skin with long hair for a preschooler would always get special treatments .I couldn’t stand it so one day I did something the girl did and I got in trouble. Not in major trouble but wasn’t right. So I yell, “this not right” the teacher said okay and shaked her head. When I got home I got in trouble I think and sat in the corner. I still think that want right.
Part One:
ReplyDeleteThe short story that I decided to read was “The Lottery”. My favorite character in this story was Mr. Summers. In the beginning of the story, Mr. Summers portrays himself as a professional business man and a strong leader. Another trait that I saw in Mr. Summer was that he sometimes found himself outspoken by others; he was also the fussy type who enjoys fussing at and with other people. By reading this story, I got the sense that Mr. Summer was not very found of children, not because he has no children, but because of his attitude towards them. Towards the middle of the story, I started to notice Mr. Summers that attitude towards the women are much different then his attitude towards the men in the story. Another vibe that I received from Mr. Summers was that he started to grow a bit impatient with some of the other characters. As I neared to the conclusion of this short story, the feelings that I had about Mr. Summers’ actions were finally changed from thinking that Mr. Summers was a nice guy with a positive attitude to that maybe he was a little sneaky. At one point, Mr. Summers give a very nervous boy some encouraging and positive advice. Then, a citizen from the group points out that he is being sneaky and cheating in order to win himself.
Part Two:
‘ Don’t be nervous Jack”, someone said. “Take your time son,” said Mr. Summers’. This Line from the story is important to me because these simple statements show just how much the citizens in this small town are united and loving to one another.
Part Three:
One character that I felt that I had a personal connection with was Janey Dunbar. Janey Dunbar had to take the place of her sick husband, Clyde Dunbar, and she was the only woman up, on the stage with all those men. The connection that I have with Janey Dunbar is being the only female out of a big group of males. The personal connection is when I was in middle school, I was the only who made the soccer team and I, like Janey Dunbar, was the only girl out of o group of boys.
First:
ReplyDeleteI decided to read the lottery. I thought the story was going to be really boring, but as I read on it got more intresting and intresting. The character I picked was tessie. At first she was not even stressing about the lottery. She had actully forgot about the lottery. She was going about her day as a regular day. Then the other lady reminded her what that day was. She was probably not even nervous, as each one of them went to the lottery they probably thought it will never be me. And tessie was there with a smile on her face , not knowing that would be the time she got stoned her self. The title of the story and the actual story is totally different to me. You would think that an poor person won the lottery and gave back to there community or something. But no, its about a poor lady getting stoned by 300 people because she had a dot on her ticket.
Part two:
"Its not fair, its not fair" as tessie kept repeating over and over. It really wasn't fair, she shouldn't be punished for having a black dot on her ticket. If I was tessie I would have never showed up to the lottery. But also, tessie shouldn't be shelfish, she should have been happy it was her and not one of her very young children. A lot, of times I say its not fair, to my parents but sometims its just me being shelfish.
Third:
The character I made a connecton with in the story was tessie because she kept saying how it wasn't fair. I often, say theings aren't fair. But I usually don't look at the good part of the situation. In tessies situation she should have been glad that it was her and not her young child.
FIRST: When i first started reading the short story the lottery, i thought it was going to be really boring.I also thought it was based on the movie lottery ticket. As i began to read the short story it became very fascinating to me. The character i picked was tessie because she is alot like me at times, always late to something important.
ReplyDeleteSECOND:It was really messed up when tessie had got the black spot on her ticket jus because she was late a few times here and there. To me stoneing her wouldnt have been my descion i would just tell her she would have to clean someting for like a month or 2. If i was in her situation i 9 out of 10 i wwouldnt have showed up if i knew i was going to be late but then again its better that it was her than one of her children.
THIRD: My character is tessie because we both complain about how stuff isn't fair in life an how we wish we could change the situation but at the end of the day you learn from what you did and learn how not to do it again(learn from your mistakes)
the other male character in love of life was an important character. he endured alot when he was left for dead on the river by bill with a twistedc ankle.the story used alot of figurative language that described the setting.
ReplyDeletethe part where he wispered in a scream bills voice twice, because that really showed how bill had left the man without even caring. although he still hadnt lost hope that bill was waiting around the corner for him. and when he went around, bill was nowhere to be found.
the character im most like is the man, which i never found out his name. he was so strong, and never gave up. his ankle had swollen up to the size of his knee, which is about 2 times larger than normal, and he was still prepared to kill this large game so that he could eat it because he was famished. he was truly strong. even stronger than the man being hunted in the most dangeroous game. this man went about three days in the beginning of the story just eating berries which were just water around a hard chewy seed. some people could never last like this guy. gis ankle could've been infect but he kept going.
First off I ready "The Lottery". The story itself bored me to death, but the character that I am following is Mr.hutchington. There family does not believe that they are going to win the lottery.
ReplyDeleteSecond the hutchinsons reaction to winning the lottery is not normal. The husban seemed disappointed when they found out they won. The wife started saying how its not fair and stuff like that.
Finaly the ending seemed weird because every one started picking up rocks and then the winning family started saying its not fair.
The part were Mr.summers says who the winner is is were the story was most important. The winner aparently gets hit with rocks.
I can connect with this story because its like getting answer right and then getting heckled by your peers because they think you are a nerd. The winner gets attacked by the losers in this story.
First:
ReplyDeleteI read The Lottery. It was boring until around the middle. The middle is when it started getting good. The character I followed was Tessie. At the beginning, she was late but excited about the lottery. In the middle, she started getting worried when her husband got the paper with the dot on it. In the end, she was the person with the dot on the paper, and that's when she became sad.
Second:
The important line is when Tessie said "It isn't fair, It isn't right. This line shows how stupid the lottery is. It shows that the lottery is a waste of time.
Third:
The connection i made with the story is when Tessie said the lottery isn't fair. If i was in her position, i would feel the same way. The whole village basically turn their backs on her. I thought the lottery was going to be about someone poor winning the lottery.
First, I read The Lottery. When I first starting reading it I didn't like it. Mainly because I couldn't really get into it or catch the point that well. But as I started reading on, it was actually pretty good and interesting. The character I choose to elaborate on is Bill Hutchinson because I honestly think my perspective of him changed throughout the story.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a quote by Bill representing my point, but I can show how his actions changed my perspection of him. At the beginning of the story I thought he was a man who always stood by his wife and co-signed for her when she was directing her children. Just like at the beginning of the story, when it says "His father spoke up sharply, and Bobby came quickly and took his place between his father and his oldest brother." I thought from there that he was committed in his family relationship. But as I read on his wife had a paper with a mark on it, which calls for her to be stoned to death. Bill, supposedly the husband, held it up and bragged it to the crowds, causing them to get rowdy and begin to stone her. As if he was proudly boasting that it was time to stone her, his own wife. That's what gave me the idea that he was just nothing but a traitor. He even let his kids stone her as well. Just the fact that he sat there and let them do that to his own wife shows me how he changed my perspective throughtout the story. He let little Dave Hutchinson prepare to stone her as well. It just isn't fair.
I connected with Tessie in the story because at least she knew that this act was not right towards people just because that randomly had a mark on their paper. The whole lottery's ways of working seems unfair to me because it is already obvious that someone will have to pick cards with black marks on them, so why make that a reason to stone people to death. I connected with Tessie because she was the only one who clearly understood that the act was unfair. Although Mrs. Hutchinson's own husband couldn't seem to see that.
Part 1: I read the amazing short story, The Lottery. This story was outstanding. When I first started reading I didn't know what to expect. I thought the story was going to be based off of things that really happened in real life. But I was in a rude awaking. My character that I chose was Tessie. She changed dramaticly throughout the story. first she was late, but was so excited. Then after evryone name was called and they opened their slip of paper she was upset. All she said was that it wasnt fair. She knew it was a posiblity that she was going to get stoned. At the end she had nothing left to say, because she was about to get stoned.
ReplyDeletePart 2: The most important line in the story to me was....Mrs.
Part 3: In the the story I read about a lot of different things. I connected with the story a little, but mainly with the characters. Once I started reading I notice some of things the characters did that I do. The people in the villlage are very unique and all have a different way of living. Although I have things in common with the villagers, we still have different lifestyles and behave in different manors. I think that I act a little like all the characters in the story. The first person I think I have things in ckommon with is Mr.Summers. He is a very organized man. He is the person that most people would blame if anything dealing with the lottery caused harm to them or any of their relatives. Although he is blamed for many things he keeps his head up. The next person I think I act like is Mr. Graves. If there is any work that needs to be done Im your girl. Mr.graves seems like the type that trys to help out as much as he can, which reminds me of someone quite like myself. I also think I act alot like Mrs.Hutchinson because she was late for The Lottery. When I am so exicted for something I tend to tell myself things so that I wont forget. Once I start to do something else and get very interested into I forget about the current event. Once I rememeber I drop everything to try and make it. When I read the book me and some of my friends disscuced it. They thought that I acted alot like Tessie because of the fact that just because it was her she was upset. But if the shoe was on the other foot, she wouldnt even care. I thought that this was something that everyone did, including myself. If i had a posibility that I was going to get stoned I would keep calm. If someone else got stoned I would show a little sympathy for them but it wouldnt affect me as much. But if the person that got stoned just so happened to me, I would very upset and i would do the same thing as Tessie and blame it on someone.
First Part: I read the short story entitled "The Lottery". The character I think that changed is Tessie. The reason why is, because in the beginning she was excited about the lottery event knowing that she was late. During the middle, she began to get upset because she thought that it wasn't fair how she didn't get enough time to retrieve a slip. At the end, she finally got what she wanted and still thought it was unfair of how the event ended and got hit by stones.
ReplyDeleteSecond Part: The line that I choose from the short story is from Tessie saying, "It wasn't fair". This line is important becasue, she knows that she was late and she didn't have enough time to select a slip. It really wasn't fair how it happened, but at the same time it was because she arrived late so that was her consequence. Maybe it wasn't fair because each person should get the same amount of time to select a slip. They should've just let her pick a slip just like everyone else and go to her seat.
Third Part: A personal connection that I made with the story is that I understand how the game is played. I wouldn't mind playing the game myself, but I know that I need to arrive on time so that I can have enough time to pick my slip. I understand how Tessie feels, but I also understand how the host feels. Even though I might have been late to the event doesn't mean that you have to decrease my time of recieving a slip. Then again, I was late so I have to face my consequence of not getting a slip and having to start over with game.
First:My character is Bobby Martin from The Lottery. At the beginning of the story, Bobby and some friends gather stones for the event. He occasionally chases or annoys another kid. Not much is said in the middle of the story about him accept he rejoins his parents. At the end of the story, Bobby takes the stones in his hand and throws them at the winner. Second:"It's not right, it's not fair!" This is the most important line in the story because it gives a shocking conclusion with a twist.
ReplyDeleteThird:I can relate to Bobby in many ways. He likes to annoy people alot and he is like a ring leader. Bobby is also a troublemaker.

ReplyDeleteThe Lottery is a story about this village that does a lottery that all of the villagers haft to join in. The lotteries that took place are nothing anywhere near similar to the ones that we have in modern day U.S.A. . In this lottery no one picks a numbers and waits by the television in the story the head male of the family has to draw a little slip from a little black box. When someone pulls the winning slip the family that got the winning slip has to pull again. Each male member has to pull to see who is the specific winner. Further, the bad part about this lottery is that the villagers aren't really too excited about winning the lottery because the winner is supposed to be stoned to death by the other villagers.
The character that I followed was Mr.Summers. In the beginning of the story he seemed like he was never doing anything because he’d volunteer for a plethora of events. Mr.summers has no kids and his wife seemed like all she wanted to do was to put her husband down. Then my whole perspective changed of him when I found out that they were going to stone the winner to death. In my mind Mr. Summers and everyone in the village had some type of mental problem because who actually benefits in the stoning situation.
I read the greatest short story every, the lottery. the lottery was a story about people in a village having to join the lottery. The people in the lottery had a type of mental problem. in the lottery any village that has won the lottery had to get stoned by the other people surround them. my charcter I liked was bobby because he was a cruel person. in the rising part of the story booby and a couple of friends had went to gather some stones. He was the type of person that will get on your nervse and was annoying. He was a very annoying person.

ReplyDeletethe story i liked was the lottery.my favorite character was tessie.in the beggining of the story she was very excited about the lottery.but towasrds the middle and the end she was mad, because it was taking to long.
second part
the line i liked in the story was when tessie said it isn't right,it isn't fair.she was showing how she felt about the lottery
third part
the connection that me and tessie has is that we see things that others dont if someone has a slip or mark. it doesnt make sence
First Part:I didn't read neither story. i had already read the lottery so i knew the story by hard. the character i chose was Mrs.Hutchinson. i change her because she was the character that changed the most. in the beginning of the story even though she was late, she was also happy and really excited. she changed because they didn't pick her name and towards the end she knew she was going to get stoned.
ReplyDeleteSecond part:"it isnt fair,it isnt right" mrs.hutchinson feels that the lottery picking was not right and no where near fair.
Personal Connection: the personal connection i made with the text the lottery was very personal because this situation has happend to me before. this situation has reminded me of when my teacher chose the line leader when i was little and i though that it wasnt fair because i was the most behaved student in her 1st grade class.
